can you create a report for class lists that runs automatically in excel so that we don't have to merge it after the fact?

"class list in excel"
as of now, I have to run a class list, then mail merge to "export in excel" if a teacher wants it in that format. Can there be a report that is set up to run in excel and eliminate the middle steps. I would be able to run the list and email it out more easily and efficiently.

No clue what you are envisioning. How do you tell in excel what class you want? what period? Makes no sense.

insert all the parameters on top same as now. programs/period/subject/class
choose the report that is called (if you create it) class list in excel
report comes up in excel format instead of as a word document

You can export to excel from reports too. Not only from mail merge. Do you know that?
